December 18th, 2014

It is always true that in any company or in any groups within a company, people resist the changes based on earlier experience. While it is not an issue, I feel one should be open to get other's(who joined recently or in last 1 year) views.

I think one of the item related to employee development which is talked about year over year but not much progress seen is "Career Development". Every Manager have their own opinion about 'what is career development'. One think that it is related to Promotion; Another think that it is related to "Skill development in their current Role"; someone else thinks that it is related to "long term career development". Most of the time Managers think that 'Career development' is responsibility of the employee and Manager cannot do much about it.

In my opinion, 'Career Development' plan is responsibility of the employee, it is for the Skill Development (in current role) and for the long term career(perceived role in the future). Certainly it is not for tracking or doing things for Promotion; While the CDP will help to have the items which will help for promotion, but intention is not for assuring any promotion. CDP need to be well supported by the Manager so that Employee feels that he has all the resources to achieve his growth (w.r.t Talent and Skills).

Learning: Does not matter, how long you are with a company or the group, be open to listen to others and check whether we can make use of other's suggestions to change the way it has been done in the past.
