December 18th, 2014

It is always true that in any company or in any groups within a company, people resist the changes based on earlier experience. While it is not an issue, I feel one should be open to get other's(who joined recently or in last 1 year) views.

I think one of the item related to employee development which is talked about year over year but not much progress seen is "Career Development". Every Manager have their own opinion about 'what is career development'. One think that it is related to Promotion; Another think that it is related to "Skill development in their current Role"; someone else thinks that it is related to "long term career development". Most of the time Managers think that 'Career development' is responsibility of the employee and Manager cannot do much about it.

In my opinion, 'Career Development' plan is responsibility of the employee, it is for the Skill Development (in current role) and for the long term career(perceived role in the future). Certainly it is not for tracking or doing things for Promotion; While the CDP will help to have the items which will help for promotion, but intention is not for assuring any promotion. CDP need to be well supported by the Manager so that Employee feels that he has all the resources to achieve his growth (w.r.t Talent and Skills).

Learning: Does not matter, how long you are with a company or the group, be open to listen to others and check whether we can make use of other's suggestions to change the way it has been done in the past.

Today was one of those day I could not take it easy. We are supposed to provide a PPT Slide which should be present to VP. I am not very good at creating Jazzy PPT Slides. However, I am amazed by one of my colleague who converted an earlier "Text Based! Preso' to 'Colorful Presentation'. Immediately I told him and requested him that, I would like him to be my 'mentor'/'coach' for creating excellent PPT Slides.

Result: The PPT Slide was reviewed. Based on the comments from others, I certainly felt that, I should give more importance to each and every word when we are presenting it to Senior Management. I am (self) motivated to create better PPT Slides in the future.

Motivation Factor: Knowing that I can go to someone to brainstorm ideas on creating better PPT Slides and thereby improving myself.

Sep 13th,2014

Today is one of those Saturday, when I  could complete my personal commitments and still do work related to my responsibility at office. Also, having exam for my son also helped me to 'stay put' at home!.

Result: Searched internet for information related to "potential of workforce" and added those links in my blog Career Tips. Motivation: Wanted to clarify my own thoughts on meaning of 'potential of workforce' and compare it with others.

Demotivation:: Nothing can demotivate me as I am at home!!!

Sept 12th, 2014

Today (usually all Friday for me) was a quiet day. No meetings, No 1-on-1s.

  • Result: Volunteered for an activity. The topic was also my favorite (anything related to Employee Motivation/Development). Since I have not done this kind of activity for long time, thought of pushing myself. Motivation: I was optimist that I will learn something out of it.
  • Demotivation: Nothing demotivated me today!
